The Ragamuffin Gospel

Summary

The good news of Jesus only makes sense in the context of grace. We can’t save or change ourselves; only God’s love can do it. He can free us from self-hatred and encourage us to trust Him with our life. And He doesn’t require us to clean ourselves up or get into shape before we return to Him. Like the prodigal son, God welcomes us to come back to Him despite our weaknesses and failures. And He invites us to live with the faith of beloved ragamuffins, risking everything on His love.

“The Good News of the gospel of grace cries out: We are all equally privileged but unentitled beggars at the door of God’s mercy.”

“The child of God knows that the graced life calls him or her to live on a cold and windy mountain, not on the flattened plain of reasonable, middle-of-the-road religion.”

“To be alive is to be broken. And to be broken is to stand in need of grace.”

“Home is not a heavenly mansion in the afterlife but a safe place right in the midst of our anxious world.”

“The call asks, Do you really accept the message that God is head over heels in love with you? I believe that this question is at the core of our ability to mature and grow spiritually. If in our hearts we really don’t believe that God loves us as we are, if we are still tainted by the lie that we can do something to make God love us more, we are rejecting the message of the cross.”

“Our eyes reveal whether our souls are spacious or cramped, hospitable or critical, compassionate or judgmental. The way we see other people is usually the way we see ourselves. If we have made peace with our flawed humanity and embraced our ragamuffin identity, we are able to tolerate in others what was previously unacceptable in ourselves.”
