Jesus & Psalm 22
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Psalm 22 (NIV)
From the cross, Jesus points us to Psalm 22
Pour out heart (Also points to fulfillment of prophecy)
Physical agony (bones out of joints, hands and feet pierced, dry mouth)
Emotional agony (scorned, taunted, mocked, insulted)
Circumstantial agony (lots cast for clothes, John and women risking being there, criminals crucified alongside him, busy crossroads in the midst of a major festival)
Turn eyes toward God
Looks at the past faithfulness of God to His people (Deliverance & salvation)
Looks to personal experience (Taught to trust since birth)
Looks to God to meet His needs in the present
Responds with voice in praise
He has not scorned me or hidden his face
He will do the same for all of the poor and needy who seek Him
He will rule over even the most powerful of the earth
He has done it!
I like to think of Jesus praying this Psalm from the cross - perhaps too weak physically to say all of it aloud, But He prays it in His heart. In it, He shows us the way, both leading and empowering
Leads - How to pray through difficult situations, turning to God in our pain
Empowers - He did this for us because of His love. Lock eyes with Him and follow.
“I did this for you. If you were the only person on the earth, I still would have come just for you.”
