Insane For the Light

A Spirituality For Our Wisdom Years

by Ronald Rolheiser

Summary

According to Rolheiser, there is a rhythm and reason to the aging process, because God intends for it to accomplish a great purpose in our lives. The experience of aging is meant to return us to a state of helplessness and dependence on both God and other people. If we allow it to do so, the experience of aging has the power mellow our soul and transform us into people who can give our deaths as a final gift to the people we leave behind. If we will stay with the great task of living out our final days in surrender to the love and goodness of God, we will leave behind blessing and life for those who will follow after us.

“The process of aging and dying will do for us what a deep life of prayer and selflessness was meant to do for us—namely, break our selfishness and open us to the realm of spirit. The process of aging and dying has clear intent: God will get us, one way or the other.”

“Forgiving others is the ultimate prerequisite to taking a seat at the heavenly banquet table. Jesus says so…he warns us that if we do not forgive other another, God will not forgive us…The issue is harmony at God’s table. In simple terms, the table of God is open to everyone who is willing to sit down with everyone. God does not have separate tables for those who cannot sit down with one another.”

“We all must eventually come to a place where we accept that we are not self-sufficient, that we need help, that we need others, that we need community, that we need grace, that we need God.”

“What is revealed unequivocally in Jesus’s life and death is that God loves us unconditionally and that there is no private hell that would cause God to love us less for even one second. Rather, we live with the assurance that God will always look for us, find us, pass through any locked door we have erected, and, once inside, lovingly breathe out peace to still all that is aching, wounded, and not whole.”
