Summary
These days, I find myself buying up Barbara Brown Taylor books to read as morning devotional material.
I so appreciate her willingness to wrestle with scripture. Unwilling to accept the typical human-focused interpretations that leave one feeling that the Bible is little more than a self-improvement manual.
I recommend this collection of sermons for anyone struggling with a faith experience of impossible expectations.

“While the main purpose of his [Matthew’s] gospel was to tell the story of Jesus the Christ, he had to do more than that. He had to tell it to people who were frightened and tired of waiting—people who desperately wanted to know whether Jesus’ delay was part of the master plan or whether he was missing in action.
“If we only listen for God in church, we will miss half of the message. The good news is always beginning somewhere in the world, for those with ears to hear and hearts to go wherever the way may lead.”
“This is not a story about us. This is a story about God and about God’s ability not only to call us but also to create us as a people who are able to follow—able to follow because we cannot take our eyes off the one who calls us, because he interests us more than anything else in our lives, because he seems to know what we hunger for and because he seems to be food.”
“When you put him [Stephen] and Jesus together, it is pretty hard to deny that this is what Christian success looks like: not converting other people to our way of thinking; not having the oldest, prettiest church in town; not even going out of our ways to be kind and generous, but telling the truth so clearly that some people want to kill us for it.”
“No matter how hard we try in the church, we will always mess some things up. And no matter how badly we mess some things up in the church, other things will keep turning out right, because we are not, thank God, in charge. With the eyes of your heart enlightened, you can usually spot the one who is.”
