The Sin of Certainty

Why God Desires Our Trust More Than Our ‘Correct’ Beliefs

by Peter Enns

Summary

As Christians, we have to be careful not to get so hung up on what we know (head knowledge) that we miss the point of our faith — knowing our God through living in relationship with Jesus (heart knowledge). Historically, we have often acted our ugliest in an attempt to defend God’s words, thus fashioning our own flawed version of truth.

Enns argues that Christians need to let go and fall back on God in faith, rather than certainty.

“I believe that the Bible does not model a faith that depends on certainty for the simple fact that the Bible does not provide that kind of certainty. Rather, in all its messy diversity, the Bible models trust in God that does not rest on whether we are able to be clear and certain about what to believe.”

“The Bible is a book of diverse voices that speaks into diverse situations and says what needs to be said then and there.”

“I am thankful to God for this Bible rather than a sanitized one where spiritual struggles of the darkest kind are brushed aside as a problem to be fixed rather than accepted as part of the journey of faith.”

“A faith [based on certainty]…is in constant battle mode, like a cornered honey badger. Or like a watchman on the battlements scanning the horizon from sun up to sun down for any threat. And soon you forget what faith looks like when you’re not fighting about it.”

“Movement, change, and surprise are woven into the very fabric of the Christian faith.”
